Southampton vs Burnley: Predictions

Southampton and Burnley converge on the South Coast in identical situations, with both clubs boasting the same points (33) and the same goal difference (-15), and while seven points may separate them from Fulham in 18th, they will be desperate for a result on Sunday to avoid any potential danger down the line.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side remain caught in the riptide of a dispiriting run of form, which culminated in that 9-0 humbling at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford, and has seen them post just the single win across their last 12 games, which came against basement club Sheffield United.

That patchy spell for the Saints is almost diametrically at odds with the start they made, with early whispers of the club chasing Champions League football at the height of autumn, but across the festive period and into the New Year, their form has plummeted and they’re now staring at a mid-table finish.

Burnley almost by complete contrast started poorly but have now started to pick up form and are exhibiting symptoms of their muck-or-nettles mentality firmly upheld by Sean Dyche, with the club losing just once across their past eight games, and recently picking up a 2-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

Southampton vs Burnley: Match Stats

Burnley’s Achilles’ heel remains an inability to settle into games from the off, which has seen them concede 10 of their 37 goals within the first 15 minutes, a league-high share (27%) within that timeframe. Indeed, the Clarets have either scored or conceded in the opening 15 across each of their last four Premier League matches.

So, Southampton will likely look to make a fast start, and one player who could capitalise on that potential early sluggishness from the visitors is Danny Ings, who has scored in each of his last three Premier League appearances against sides he’s previously played for in the competition.

Chris Wood will be looking to do the damage at the opposite end of the turf. His six Premier League goals have been worth nine points to Burnley this season – incidentally, only Ings in 2014/15 has earned more for the Clarets in a single campaign in the competition.
