The Gunners have been going through a rocky patch of late, dropping two-goal leads against both Liverpool and West Ham to suffer draws which has allowed second-placed Manchester City to close the gap to four points. Arsenal have currently played a game more than Man City, but face Pep Guardiola’s side next week and victory here would add pressure to their title rivals – especially as they sit out the Premier League this weekend due to their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals.

A chance to go seven points clear at the top ahead of next week’s match, even having played two games more, would put Arsenal in a great position of control as they look to win their first league title since 2003/04. However, there are some worries that Arsenal have missed their opportunity for the crown now as complacency slipped in particularly when 2-0 up against relegation-battling West Ham last weekend.

It’s another relegation battler on Friday with Southampton bottom of the table and running out of time to save their Premier League status. While things are still quite tight at the bottom, Southampton are in danger of falling adrift, now four points from safety and looking unlikely to end their current poor run of results.

Since a 1-0 win over Leicester at the start of March, Southampton have won just two points from their past six matches, though they did come in draws against Manchester United and Tottenham. Southampton will also try to take some confidence from the fact that they also held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season, but that was a long time ago now.

Arsenal vs Southampton match stats

Although they have looked a little shaky of late, Arsenal are in good goalscoring form at home in the Premier League. The Gunners have won their last four league games at the Emirates, scoring 15 times and conceding four. This isn’t inflated by a pasting either, with Arsenal scoring at least three goals in each of their past four games, last doing so in five straight matches in 2018.

Speaking of good goalscoring form, Gabriel Jesus has hit the ground running following his return from injury, with four goals in his last three Premier League starts. The Brazilian is now on nine Premier League goals for the season and will be looking to become the fourth Arsenal player to hit 10+, after Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.
