The 2023/24 Championship season kicks-off with League One play-off winners Sheffield Wednesday hosting the 2022/23 Premier League bottom side Southampton.
For the first time since 2011, the Saints will begin a new season in the second division of English football after a disastrous campaign last term saw the south coast side pick up just six wins all season and finish rock bottom of the Premier League. Russell Martin is the man tasked with getting them promoted back to the top flight at the first attempt, but faces a tough opening game in the way of Sheffield Wednesday.
Its a tough ask for the new Southampton head coach, especially with the future of a lot of his squad still up in the air, including James Ward-Prowse, who remains at the club but has been linked with a move back to the Premier League.
The Owls are back in the Championship after two seasons away and will be determined not to drop back to League One after an enthralling play-off campaign that saw them comeback from 4-0 in the first-leg of the semi-final to knock Barnsley out on penalties. They too start the season with a new manager, with Xisco Munez now in charge after replacing Darren Moore in the summer.
