Newcastle vs Sheffield United: Predictions
Sheffield United’s visit to Newcastle is one of the dead rubber matches in the final two gameweeks of the 2020/21 Premier League season, with the hosts safe and the visitors prepping for a return to the Championship. Last time out, Newcastle were involved in one of the most exciting and bizarre matches of the Premier League as they were beaten 4-3 by Manchester City, taking the lead twice before eventually falling.
It continued a strange run for Newcastle which has also seen them beat Leicester City and West Ham and draw with Tottenham and Liverpool in their past seven games, losing only to Man City and Arsenal in that period. The run is made even more strange considering Newcastle were winless in six prior to their draw against Tottenham.
For Sheffield United, the final two games are about ending the season on a high, as getting off the bottom of the table appears to be a tall order. The Blades are six points behind 19th-placed West Brom and would require a goal difference swing on top of points to overtake them.
But Sheffield United have now won two of their past four games, including their most recent match against Everton, with Daniel Jebbison scoring the only goal at Goodison Park on Sunday. It means they have now won more Premier League games than both Fulham and West Brom this season, despite entering 2021 with a victory.
Newcastle vs Sheffield United: Match Stats
One of the main men in Newcastle’s decent run at the end of the season has been Joe Willock, with the Arsenal loanee lighting up St James’ Park since his arrival in January. Since Willock’s Newcastle debut against Southampton on February 6 (in which he scored) no Mapgies player has netted more Premier League goals than the Englishman’s six, with Joelinton (three) next. Willock has also scored in each of his last five Premier League games and will be looking to become only the third Newcastle player to achieve that feat after Papiss Cisse and Alan Shearer, while also the youngest in the league’s history.
Newcastle United vs Sheffield United doesn’t scream goals, but this is a Steve Bruce side that has been turning up the entertainment in the latter stages of the season. The Magpies’ last two games alone have seen both teams score with 13 goals total, including seven for Newcastle. Newcastle also haven’t kept a clean sheet in nine Premier League games, with their defence potentially giving Sheffield United a chance to improve on their terrible goalscoring record.
