Shakhtar Donetsk vs Basel: Predictions, betting tips, odds & match preview
Marcel Koller’s men make the trek to the Metalist Stadium as part of this week’s Europa League quarterfinal schedule, featuring the likes of Wolves, Manchester United, and four-time holders, Sevilla.
Unfortunately – well at least for FCB fans – Basel aren’t operating as the betting favourites. They face a side that are unbeaten in their last 10 matches and will look to secure a semifinal spot. So, take a read of our predictions and betting tips, and find out how the hosts, Shakhtar Donetsk, will orchestrate their victory…
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Basel Preview
Luis Castro and his side have had a convincing Europa League campaign this season, showcasing the full scale of their skills when they made light work of Wolfburg in both legs in their recent RO16 tie.
At the Olimpiyskiy, the Kroty’s scored an early goal, only to be pegged back again by Wolfburg’s John Brooks. It was only late on in the 73rd minute that Marcos Antonio restored the lead for his side, with the pressure on the hosts to ensure Shakhtar didn’t add to their tally and take the tie away from Koller and co in the second leg.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly how it unfolded. Indeed, despite a valiant first-half display where the visitors somehow kept Shakhtar from scoring, the seams of the Wolfsburg defence came loose in the dying minutes of the game with Junior Moraes and Manor Solomon scoring three quick-fire goals in the space of mere moments to ensure the emphatic victory went their way.
The 3-0 defeat for Wolfsburg meant that that they’d failed to score for the first time in ten European matches – however, all eyes were on Shakhtar’s would-be opposition in the following week’s quarterfinal meetings: Basel.
Indeed, where goals galore was the name of the game for Castro and his men, the second-leg was an entirely different one for the Bebbi against Eintracht Frankfurt.
It was a solitary goal from defender Fabian Frei in the 88th minute that sealed the deal for the hosts, adding to their first-leg 4-0 scoreline in some style. And were it not for the heroics of Kevin Trapp, there would have been more goals in it for Koller’s men.
Fortunately, this Tuesday’s oponents will look to pose a far more telling challenge than Frankfurt did, making for an altogether more thrilling quarterfinal clash.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Basel Predictions
In their performance against Wolfsburg, this Tuesday’s hosts showcased exactly why, unlike Basel, they possess the means to very easily seal off the tie in their favour.
Indeed, Oliver Glasner’s men may have allowed their opposition to dominate the RO16 clash, but both sides can agree that Shakhtar as a collective were sharper, more convincing, ruthless in their lightning-fast attacking surges.
The passage of play from defence through to attack was seamless, offering no spaces in between the lines, or any opportunity to counter. And when Castro’s men finally got around to scoring, they were merciless and spared no expense at the hands of the Wolfsburg back four.
Even more impressive, however, was the Shakhtar defence – one that claimed a first clean sheet in 27 games, and an 11th win in their last 13 home matches.
With Basel having to travel to the Metalist and face a side compact across the pitch, there’ll be very few chances to latch onto mistakes, or counter, which is why our tipsters are wagering against another tight-knit display from the hosts.
Sure, the visitors do specialise in dismantling teams, and that much was on show in the display against Eintracht Frankfurt last week. It wouldn’t go amiss to see Basel to absorb the various SD attacks and then pit their own.
But where Basel may excel and possess strengths, Shakhtar look to be one step ahead, with their carefully-styled formation, that’ll see fullbacks defending the flanks, allowing the likes of Moraes to do the lord’s good work up front.
All in all, while our forecasts to see Basel creating plenty of chances and perhaps even netting given Shakhtar’s questionable clean-sheet record, it won’t be enough to overpower a team teeming with attacking options, with the added incentive of a winning streak to match.
The Donetsk passing patterns keep their attack in the forefront. Can Basel derail the flow?
Squawka Stat: Shakhtar have scored two goals or more in eight of their last ten fixtures. Can they repeat their attacking feats on home turf in a Europa League quarterfinal?
Our answer? Yes. The hosts are in great goalscoring form, with their talisman Moraes leading the charge at opposing defences.
Indeed, although the 30-year-old hasn’t been as prolific in domestic ventures this season, when it comes to the Europa League, there are very few converting with the kind of consistency that the Ukrainian is – that is, 3 goals and an assist in four games.
Aside from Moraes, however, there are plenty of others capable of netting, which is what makes Shakhtar so compelling to watch, as a collective unit. Where Basel may solely rely on Samuele Campo, this week’s host also offer Solomon, Marquinhos Cipriano, Tete and much more.
Such an atacking armour means that the liklihood of clinical finishing and scoring is far higher than that of Basel’s contingent, evident in their inability to blow Eintracht Frankfurt away despite having chance after chance to do so.
Our prognosis? Expect the xG boys to have their work cut out as two attacking teams lock horns at the Metalist. The actual game, however, could have two or three cutting conversions that take the game away from the opposition, with our wagers punting on the hosts to do so.
