Senegal and Egypt renew their recent rivalry for the third time in just two months when they collide in Dakar for the second leg of CAF’s World Cup qualification ‘Third Round’. The first leg in Cairo saw Carlos Queiroz’s Pharaohs run out 1-0 victors courtesy of an own goal by Saliou Ciss in the opening five minutes.

Mohamed Salah and Co held out for the rest of the game on home soil, but the Liverpool talisman will know that the job is only half done, as Senegal welcome them to their back yard, looking to overturn a deficit and put it all on the line for a chance to take part in November’s quadrennial showpiece.

Egypt reached the World Cup in 2018 after a protracted absence from the tournament which dated back to 1990, while Senegal were also in the last edition of the football’s ultimate competition having not taken part since 2002. Unfortunately, though, 2022’s instalment will only feature one of the Afcon finalists.

Senegal vs Egypt: Match Stats

If anyone is going to turn this game on its head and push the momentum in Senegal’s favour, it’s Sadio Mane. However, the Liverpool forward may find his best success in the second half, a trend that has been following him for a while now. In fact, Mane’s last seven international goals for Senegal have all come in the second half. The three he bagged at Afcon came in the 87th minute against Burkina Faso, the 63rd against Cape Verde and the 97th against Zimbabwe. Don’t expect a goal fest in Dakar, either. Each ‘Third Round’ first leg in CAF’s qualifiers finished with under 1.5 goals, and we may see another round of tight fixtures with so much at stake.

Senegal vs Egypt: Head to Head

25 Mar 2022 – Egypt 1-0 Senegal – World Cup Qualifying

06 Feb 2022 – Senegal 0-0 (4-2 on pens) Egypt – Afcon Final

15 Oct 2014 – Egypt 0-1 Senegal – Afcon Qualifying

05 Sep 2014 – Senegal 2-0 Egypt – Afcon Qualifying

07 Feb 2006 – Egypt 2-1 Senegal – Afcon

The standout fixture, excluding Friday’s first leg, is of course their Afcon Final clash last month. Having finished goalless, with Mane actually missing a penalty in regulation time, the final went the distance and was left to chance with the lottery of a penalty shootout. Mane ultimately stepped up to net the tournament-winner penalty before Salah even got a chance to place the ball down from 12 yards, sealing Senegal’s first Afcon triumph in the process.
