Bayer Leverkusen are currently outside the European qualification spots in the Bundesliga, behind sixth-placed Wolfsburg on goal difference with just two games left to play. While a Europa League, or Conference League, spot is still up for grabs, if Leverkusen want to play in the Champions League next season they’ll have to win the Europa League.
However, the current standing of this tie and Leverkusen’s history doesn’t bode well for the German club. Trailing 1-0 after the first leg, Leverkusen have only progressed from one of their last 11 two-legged ties in major European competitions when losing the first leg – but that one occasion did come against Monaco in the Europa League knockout round playoffs.
Roma, meanwhile, are trying to do the climb up European football, winning each competition along the way. It started last season with the Europa Conference League, continues this year with the Europa League and would end with the Champions League next season. Or at least, that’s the goal.
Leading thanks to Edoardo Bove’s second-half strike in the first leg, and have progressed from 23 of their last 25 two-legged ties in major European competitions when winning the first leg. This is also Jose Mourinho’s Roma, of course, and if anyone knows how to see out a lead the Special One.

Lorenzo Pellegrini has been one of the biggest attacking threats for Roma in the Europa League this season with four goals and four assists in 12 games so far. He’s also taken the most shots for Roma with 33, averaging 3.06 per 90 minutes. The Italian has been directly involved in more goals than any other player in the Europa League so far this campaign.
Roma may have a good record when leading the first leg of a European tie, but they aren’t too hot away from home. The Italian side have won just one of their last eight away games in Europe, while four of the past five games against Leverkusen have seen both teams find the net.
