The qualifiers for Euro 2024 have finally got underway, and the Republic of Ireland kickstart their journey against continental heavyweights France early next week. Didier Deschamps’ men have already set the tone in Group B with an emphatic 4-0 win over the Netherlands in their curtain-raiser on Friday night.
Having failed to qualify for 2020’s edition, Stephen Kenny will be doing his best to avoid a protracted absence from the quadrennial tournament for Ireland. His Boys in Green have been put into a very ominous group containing France, the Netherlands, Greece and Gibraltar, so a strong start is imperative.
Les Bleus are expected to comfortably make it out of the group, particularly after battering their most likely threat to first, the Netherlands, on Friday. Deschamps’ men ran rampant at the Stade de France, with goals from Antoine Griezmann, new captain Kylian Mbappe (two) and Dayot Upamecano getting the job done.

Republic of Ireland vs France match stats
Having netted in the opener against Oranje, vice-captain Griezmann will be determined to build on his early tally in these qualifiers. The Atletico Madrid forward has a solid record against the Republic of Ireland in his international career, netting twice in two games against them, including in the Euro 2016 knockouts.
Randal Kolo Muani could be the man to link most prominently with him. The Frankfurt forward is the only French player in Europe’s top five leagues to provide at least 10 assists this season. Such playmaker prowess has given a new dimension to Deschamps’ attack, instead of the more traditional centre-forward exploits of Olivier Giroud.
