Azerbaijan have struggled in qualifying so far with just one point (which came against the Republic) from their five games. Their last qualifier saw them go down 3-0 at home to Portugal making it nine goals shipped and just three netted. At their own ground, they are ten without a victory the last one coming against the Faroe Islands in 2018.
Republic of Ireland have had a poor qualifying campaign themselves taking just two points from their five and are nine behind Serbia in second and 11 from leaders Portugal. Back-to-back home draws (1-1 with both Azerbaijan and Serbia) seem to have put paid to their qualification hopes and they need to start putting wins down to build for the next campaign. A lack of goals is the issue with just ten netted from their last 15 and four of these came in one game against Andorra.
Azerbaijan vs Republic of Ireland: Match Stats
The Republic have been awful in qualifying and question marks exist over the future of manager Stephen Kenny and as such you could not take them here but then nor could you take a home side winless at home since 2018. Better value comes in the first goalscorer market where Shane Duffy who netted against Azerbaijan in the penultimate game looks great value. He has looked excellent in the Premier League and is clearly a target with two of the last three Republic goals both coming from centre-halves (the other was an own-goal.
John Eagan was the other Republic of Ireland to have netted lately and given the struggles of the forward players then he is another player who looks worth a little interest to grab the opener.
