AC Milan are in the Champions League for the second consecutive season and for the first time as Italian champions since 2011/12. Then, they made it to the quarter-finals, and the Rossoneri will be hoping to mimic that compared to last season’s showing. Although they were put in a tough group, Milan will have been severely disappointed to finish bottom of Group A, evening missing out on the Europa League.
Perhaps that aided their Serie A title win, and they have had a decent start to the defence of their domestic crown. Stefano Pioli’s men are currently third after five games, one of four teams still unbeaten, with three wins and two draws. And they go into this match off the back of a massive victory, coming from behind to beat rivals Inter Milan in the Derby della Madonnina.
While Milan were unhappy in the Champions League last season, Red Bull Salzburg reached the knockout stages of the competition for the first time in the club’s history. In what was just Salzburg’s fourth appearance in the Champions League group stage, the Austrians finished second in Group G and advanced alongside Lille. However, their party didn’t last much longer as they were thrashed 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the last 16 (despite drawing the first leg).
Salzburg have had a pretty good start to the domestic season but have already tasted defeat, beaten by Sturm Graz at the end of July. However, that has been their only defeat of the season across all competitions with eight wins including a 2-0 victory over Tirol at the weekend to send Salzburg top of the Austrian Bundesliga.

Red Bull Salzburg vs AC Milan match stats
Olivier Giroud continues to defy his age and contributed with another big goal against Inter Milan at the weekend, putting the Rossoneri 2-1 up, and he knows when to turn up in the Champions League – especially on the road. Eleven of Giroud’s last 12 Champions League goals have come away from home, and 14 of his 18 overall have also been on the road – the highest proportion of all players to score more than 10 goals.
While many may back AC Milan for success, their defence is set to be tested. Salzburg scored in seven of their eight Champions League games last season, only failing to find the net in a 1-0 defeat to Lille away from home.
