It was a seven-goal thriller at the Etihad that had just about everything you could want in, not only a football match, but a Champions League semi-final. With so much build-up and top talent on display, the first leg duly delivered on its hype and anticipation. It was a spectacle doused in drama. An instant classic.
Pep Guardiola’s many facial expressions throughout the 90 minutes summed up the emotional rollercoaster as the match veered between madness and mesmerising, with City ultimately winning 4-3 on the night, but it will feel like an opportunity squandered after leading by two goals on three occasions.
Carlo Ancelotti’s recently-crowned La Liga champions refused to accept defeat at any stage, first recovering from going 2-0 down after goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus through Karim Benzema, before Vinicius Junior scored a stellar solo goal to respond after Phil Foden made it 3-1 for the hosts.
It was then Bernardo Silva who took matters into his own hands to restore City’s two-goal cushion, before Benzema executed a Panenka penalty for the ages. Seven goals, but just the single one currently separating these two sides. It’s all to play for in this tense semi-final between European royalty and uncrowned aspirants.

Real Madrid vs Man City match stats
Karim Benzema has scored nine Champions League goals in the knockout stages this season, with only Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016/17 (10) scoring more in a single season. The Frenchman could become the fourth player to score in both legs of the quarter-final and semi-final in a season, after Fernando Morientes (2003/04 with Monaco), Neymar (2014/15 with Barcelona) and Edin Dzeko (2017/18 with Roma).
Kevin De Bruyne has 18 Champions League assists for Manchester City, the most of any player and behind only Neymar (25) and Kylian Mbappe (20) in the competition since his debut for the club in September 2015. The Belgian scored and assisted in the first leg, one of only two occasions he’s done so in the Champions League – the other was at the Bernabeu vs Real Madrid in February 2020.
