Real Madrid vs Athletic Bilbao: Predictions
Retaining the La Liga title will be the main target of Real Madrid’s campaign, although they will be hoping for more success in the knock-out competitions too. Los Blancos were beaten by Manchester City in the Champions League last term and dumped out of the Copa Del Rey by Real Sociedad, so a Super Cup victory might set them up for more silverware this term.
In the league, Zinedine Zidane’s men have started to find some consistency of late, having gone eight games without defeat and winning six of those eight. They have some work to do to catch their cross-town rivals Atletico though, who are four points clear at the top of the table with two games in hand.
Athletic Bilbao meanwhile, look set for another mid-table finish in La Liga this season. At times, los Leones have shown the kind of spirit that the San Mames devotees demand even in their absence from the stadium, but a lack of quality and consistency leaves them sat in 12th place after 18 matches.
With those supporters waiting to see their team play the Copa Del Rey final from last season against Real Sociedad with the match delayed to allow fans to attend when possible, can Marcelona’s side cause a shock or two and get their hands on some silverware through the Super Cup first?
Real Madrid vs Athletic Bilbao: Match Stats
Real Madrid’s defensive action lines in La Liga this season. Only league leaders Atletico have conceded fewer goals.
Three of Real Madrid’s last six La Liga games have been goalless at half-time and 0-0 has been the half-time score in seven of Athletic Bilbao’s La Liga fixtures this term. In a cagey, knock-out atmosphere, early chances could be at a premium and we expect the teams to go in goalless at half-time.
Four of Athletic’s last five La Liga games have finished with fewer than three goals scored and indeed Under 2.5 goals bets have come in during each one of Real Madrid’s last four matches. We expect los Blancos’ quality to shine through but the final score to be a little low on goals.
