Celtic and Rangers collide for an early-season Old Firm on Sunday, with summer appointment Ange Postecoglou getting his first taste of derby day in Glasgow. For Steven Gerrard, his side have already tasted defeat following that ‘Invincible’ campaign, but the ex-Liverpool skipper is unbeaten in his last six games against Celtic.
After an early wobble for TheBhoys and Postecoglou, the Australian coach has turned the tide, with the Parkhead club recently seeing off PSV to reach the Europa League groups stages and winning back-to-back games in the Scottish Premiership after that opening-day defeat in the capital to Hearts.
The Gers, likewise, have already tasted defeat in the league, losing 1-0 to Dundee United in a shock loss on matchday two, and they also required a play-off round to reach the Europa League group stages, edging Armenian outfit Alashkert 1-0 in very unconvincing fashion, with Gerrard absent for the second leg.
It has not yet been confirmed whether Gerrard will be in the dugout for the Old Firm game after his positive Covid test, but instructions and motivation will filter through either way from a man who certainly knows a thing or two about an old-school rivalry, having taken part in 33 Merseyside derbies.

Rangers vs Celtic: Match Stats
Rangers have been the dominant force since Gerrard took over, with the club currently unbeaten against Celtic in their last six matches, winning five of those contests by an aggregate scoreline of 11-2, including the most recent 4-1 thrashing in May, having already clinched the title as early as March.
Two players who could make a significant impact in this game are Kyogo Furuhashi of Celtic and Alfredo Morelos of Rangers. The former, who joined from Vissel Kobe in July has been in red-hot form so far, netting seven goals in just eight games, including both legs against PSV, while the latter has started to find form in Old Firms having initially gone 14 games without scoring in the derby. The Colombian now has two in his last three games.

02 May 2021 – Rangers 4-1 Celtic – Scottish Premiership
18 Apr 2021 – Rangers 2-0 Celtic – Scottish Cup
21 Mar 2021 – Celtic 1-1 Rangers – Scottish Premiership
02 Jan 2021 – Rangers 1-0 Celtic – Scottish Premiership

As mentioned, Rangers went unbeaten against Celtic last season as they clinched the title in ‘Invincible’ fashion. In fact, Gerrard’s men beat their foes five times in 2020/21 across all competitions and have already won three Old Firms this year alone. If Postecoglou is to make himself an early cult hero and really endear himself to his new fans, then a win in the Old Firm will really make his stock skyrocket.
