Having lost their Ligue 1 title to Lille last season, there was added pressure on PSG to start the new campaign strongly in their bid to dominate French football. To say they’ve done that would be to give something of an understatement, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men have won all of their opening five league games, scoring 16 goals along the way. PSG overcame a Trophee des Champions defeat to Lille by narrowly beating Troyes 2-1 in their first league game, also the closest one of their matches has finished in Ligue 1. Back-to-back 4-2 wins over Strasbourg and Brest followed before PSG went into the international break with a 2-0 win over Reims. They returned by beating Clermont Foot 4-0 and although they were frustrated in midweek by Club Brugge in the Champions League, PSG will be expectant of another league win.
Lyon, meanwhile, have only started to recover from a poor opening three games which saw them win just two points. Peter Bosz’s side started the campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Brest but followed that up with a 3-0 defeat away to Angers in which they saw Maxwel Cornet sent off – one of two occasions they would end a game with 10 men. The next game wasn’t much better, with Clermont Foot coming from two goals down to secure a 3-3 draw, but Lyon did steady the ship before the international break by beating Nantes 1-0 despite Damien Da Silva’s red card. They have continued that form since the return, beating Lyon in Ligue 1 last weekend and then leaving Ibrox with a 2-0 win over Rangers in their Europa League group stage opener.

PSG vs Lyon: Match Stats
Lionel Messi is yet to score for PSG since his summer move from Barcelona but he only made it first start for the French club in midweek, so it’s only a matter of time until he does open his new account. As everyone knows, the Argentinian is a killer on the ball and can cause a threat from even the smallest of chances when he’s in the mood. Last season, Messi scored 38 goals in 47 games across all competitions and ended the campaign as La Liga’s top scorer, with 30 strikes.
Although PSG have won all five of their league matches, their defending has been less than exemplary, and Lyon may fancy their chances of breaching the backline at least once. PSG have kept just two clean sheets in their seven fixtures this season, while Lyon have only failed to score in one of their six. Expect goals.
