It’s just third week of the new Ligue 1 season but we already have a meeting between the last two French champions. After losing to Lille in 2020/21, PSG regained their title last season to take their total Ligue 1 tally to 10th, the joint-most in French history. But that wasn’t enough to stop the club sacking Mauricio Pochettino, replacing him with Christophe Galtier.
The former Nice boss has had the perfect start to life in Paris winning the Trophee des Champions in his first game before beating both Clermont Foot and Montpellier in their opening two Ligue 1 matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding just two. PSG are already one of just three teams to boast a perfect record in Ligue 1, but the other two sides (Lyon and Lorient) have only played one game so far. The French champions are now looking to become just the second team in Ligue 1 history to score five goals in four consecutive Ligue 1 matches, after Reims in 1952.
Before Galtier joined Nice he was at Lille, leading them to the Ligue 1 title ahead of PSG just two years ago. But following Galtier’s departure Lille suffered and finished 10th last season, closer to Bordeaux at the bottom of the table than PSG at the top (24 points to 31).
However, under Paulo Fonseca they have made a good start in putting 2021/22 behind them, still unbeaten after two matches. Les Dogues opened the new campaign with a 4-1 thrashing of newly-promoted Auxerre which included two goals in the opening two minutes, sending out an early reminder to PSG of their presence. Lille did need to come from behind in their last game though to secure a 1-1 draw with Nantes.

Lille vs PSG match stats
As mentioned, PSG have been scoring for fun this season, netting 10 goals in their two Ligue 1 games so far, but it’s not something that has started under Galtier. Including the end of their 2021/22 campaign under Pochettino, PSG have have scored at least three goals in each of their last five away games in Ligue 1 and will now be looking to become the first side to manage 3+ in six consecutive matches in the league’s history.
Lionel Messi has not been named in the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or after his poor season in 2021/22 but the Argentine already appears to be in better form this year. After two games, Messi (1.77) has the highest Expected Goals tally in Ligue 1 this season, while also having the most shots on target with seven.
1 August 2021 – Lille 1-0 PSG – Trophee des Champions
3 April 2021 – PSG 0-1 Lille – Ligue 1

After losing the Trophee des Champions matchup, PSG went unbeaten in their two league matches against Lille last season, including a 5-1 win in this exact fixture. Looking further back, Lille have managed just two victories in their past 20 Ligue 1 games against PSG, with Galtier in charge for both.
