A first-half effort from Stefanie van der Gragt was enough for the Netherlands to claim a 1-0 win over Portugal which meant the Iberian nation fell to defeat on their tournament debut. Portugal were unable to produce a single shot before the break, and though Francisco Neto’s team grew into the game their best opportunity came in the final ten minutes of regular time, substitute Fatima Pinto finding space in Netherlands’ penalty area but couldn’t beat Daphne van Domselaar in the Dutch goal.
Fellow debutants Vietnam, meanwhile, suffered a 3-0 defeat to four-time champions USA, which is perhaps commendable considering they conceded 27 shots on goal while not registering a single one themselves. Defeat against the USA made it five consecutive losses with the last three seeing them concede 14 goals without reply. Before that Vietnam had won eight of their nine matches (including one loss). Each of those wins saw them scoring the match opener on or before the 20th minute.
