Going into the final round of fixtures in Group E there is still a lot to play for as three teams can still qualify for the last 16. Two of those teams are in this match with defending champions United States taking on debutants Portugal. Given the make up of this group and the way the fixtures were formed, it wasn’t a guarantee that USWNT would have qualified for the knockout stages after two games but it wouldn’t have been a surprise if they did.
In their opening match USWNT beat debutants Vietnam 3-0 with relative ease and on another day it might have been more. But their second game saw the defending champions take on Netherlands in a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final which, of course, USWNT won 2-0. The game saw USA go behind in the 17th minute but Lindsey Horan equalised in the second half to keep them top of the group.
Making their debut appearance at the World Cup, Portugal are still in with a chance of making the knockout stages, just one point behind USWNT. The debut match was a bit disappointing as Portugal were beaten 1-0 by Netherlands but there were reasons to be optimistic ahead of their second game.
In the battle of the debutants, Portugal were extremely dominant got their first two goals at the Women’s World Cup thanks to Telma Encarnacao and Kika Nazareth. However, the odds of a first ever knockout stage appearance are against them as they will likely have to beat USWNT to make it, unless Vietnam pull off a massive shock win over Netherlands.

Portugal Women vs USWNT match stats
When Jill Roord gave Netherlands the lead against USWNT last time out, it ended a long streak for the Stars and Stripes. It was the first time in 18 Women’s World Cup matches that the USWNT had been behind in a game, stretching back to the 2011 quarter-finals against Brazil.
Both USWNT and Portugal enjoyed their matches against Vietnam, using it to boost their shooting stats and test the opposition goalkeeper. As a result, both sides are in the top fix for shots on target at the 2023 Women’s World Cup among teams to have played two games so far. USA are fifth with 11 shots on target, with Portugal one behind them on 10.
