Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history when he became the first player to net in five different editions of the World Cup (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022). He is also the third player to be both a country’s oldest and youngest goalscorer at the World Cup, along with Croatia’s Ivica Olic and Denmark’s Michael Laudrup.

The former Man Utd forward — who is one goal away from equalling Eusebio’s record for most World Cup goals for Portugal — was proud as punch following their win over Ghana in the opening round. “We started on a good foot,” he said. “It’s a very important win. We know in these competitions the first match is fundamental. “It’s another record, too – that makes me very proud. I am very happy for the team to have put on an excellent performance. It was difficult but we deserved to win.”

His national team boss Fernando Santos hailed his 37-year-old captain as a “phenomenon, a legend,” adding: “In 50 years’ time, we will still be talking about him.”

Not all, though, have been quite so complimentary. Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi recently shared his thoughts on the Portuguese superstar after his now infamous interview which ultimately led to his departure from Man Utd, saying he’s “never been a Ronaldo fan”.

Mikel told Dubai Eye: “For me, when a player has so much ego, I don’t really get it. He’s never been one of my favourite players and that’s why I always go for [Lionel] Messi really. I mean, if someone comes out and gives such an interview, what makes you think, if he signs for your club in January, he won’t do the same? So, I mean, every club is going to be aware of that… but listen, he is Cristiano Ronaldo; he’s one of the greatest players ever to have played the game.

“I think he’s going to get another club in January and continue his football career. But for me, it’s just a horrible scenario, he’s done so much for the club, and to see it end this way, it’s just horrible. On his part really, I would say that interview shouldn’t have been done, wrong timing as well. It’s just not right. It doesn’t look right for such a player that has achieved so much in the game.”

As for Uruguay, they played out a goalless draw with South Korea, meaning the South Americans have now gone 465 minutes since they last conceded a goal in the group stage of the World Cup, with this being their fifth such consecutive clean sheet. Wayne Rooney was the last player to net against them in a group-stage match (for England in June 2014).
