Portugal are three-time finalists at the U21 European Championships but are yet to win the tournament, losing to Germany in the final two years ago. In 2015, Portugal were beaten on penalties by Sweden and in 1994 it was an extra-time defeat to Italy, three very close defeats that they’ll be hoping to avenge this summer.

Qualification was straightforward for Portugal as they won their group by 10 points, the biggest margin to second, with nine wins and one draw from their 10 games. But when it came to the tournament opener, against co-hosts Georgia, Portugal were beaten 2-0 and reduced to 10 men as Tomas Araujo was sent off in the second half.

Netherlands, meanwhile, are two-time winners of the U21 Euros with a 100 per cent win record in the final, beating Ukraine in 2006 and Serbia in 2007. But, of course, that 100 per cent win record in the final means it’s now been 16 years since Netherlands were last in the final, losing in the semi-finals in 2021.

The two-time winners went unbeaten in qualifying for this summer’s tournament but only finished three points clear of second-placed Switzerland, with two draws and eight wins enough to seal top spot. Yet, like Portugal, there was a failure to win for Netherlands in their opening game this summer, albeit this time with a goalless draw against Belgium.

Portugal U21 vs Netherlands U21 match stats

Having lost their first game, Portugal know they have to come out to attack at some point, as even a draw would leave them in a precarious position. But this makes for good viewing for the neutral hoping for goals. Furthermore, both teams have found the net in each of the past four meetings between these two nations at U21 level, including a 5-4 thriller back in 2014.

Looking to get amongst the goals for Netherlands will be Brian Brobbey, who scored 13 goals in the Eredivisie last season after returning from RB Leipzig permanently. The Ajax man has a good record for Netherlands at U21 level too, scoring eight goals in 14 games including five in qualifying for this summer’s tournament.
