After a close title battle last season, Porto ended up winning the league by six points, finishing ahead of defending champions Sporting CP. The Dragons must now try to do what Sporting CP failed and retain their title, something no team has done in the Primeira Liga since Benfica in 2016/17 (and the two seasons before that too).
Sergio Conceicao’s men have got their defence off to a good start, still perfect after their first two matches, though they are one of four teams to boast a 100% record. But Porto side top of the table on goals scored thanks, in part, to their 5-1 win over Maritimo on the opening weekend of the season – having already started the campaign with a 3-0 win over Tondela in the Super Cup. Last weekend, Porto beat Vizela 1-0 to keep them above second-placed Benfica.
Sporting CP, meanwhile, have had a tough start to the season, with the fixture list not doing them any favours. Last season’s runners-up opened the new campaign with a trip to face Braga, who had finished fourth, and had to settle for a 3-3 draw, giving up the lead three times including a late equaliser from Abel Ruiz.
Last weekend, Sporting CP got their first win of the season, beating Rio Ave 3-0 at home, lifting them up to fifth in the table, knowing they can make a big statement with victory against the champs.

Porto vs Sporting CP match stats
Pedro Goncalves, or Pote, has been the main man for Sporting CP so far this season, scoring three of their six goals including two in the 3-0 win over Rio Ave last time out. More of a creator last season, Pote is already just five goals behind his total league tally for 2021/22 after just two matches.
Although Porto did beat Sporting CP home and away in the semi-finals of the Taca de Portugal last season, things haven’t been as easy in the league. In fact, the past four league meetings between Porto and Sporting Cp have ended in draw, including a 2-2 and 1-1 last season. Porto are unbeaten against Sporting CP in the league in 11 matches, last losing in August 2016.

Porto got the better of Sporting CP in the cup last season but the past four league fixtures between these two sides have ended in a draw. You have to go back to 2019/20 for the last time this game didn’t end level in the league, with Porto doing the double over Sporting CP.
