The 2023 Women’s World Cup got underway on Thursday in Australia/New Zealand and in Group A, tournament debutants the Philippines take on Switzerland, who themselves are only making their second-ever appearance in the quadrennial competition. Also in the group are co-hosts New Zealand and Norway, with the former winning 1-0 in their opener.

Philippines reached the semi-finals of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which served as the continent’s qualifying campaign for this year’s World Cup. Alen Stajcic’s Filipinas were sensational as they reached the penultimate round in India and made history by qualifying for their first World Cup.

Switzerland qualified for their first World Cup in 2015 and subsequently reached the last 16, but they endured an absence from 2019’s edition. Under Inka Grings, though, La Nati are back in the competition and boast some tremendous talent in Lia Walti, Ana Maria Crnogorcevic, Noelle Maritz and Alisha Lehmann.

Philippines Women vs Switzerland Women match stats

Despite boasting those aforementioned names — Walti, Crnogorcevic, Maritz and Lehmann — it was actually Servette’s Coumba Sow who produced the goods for Switzerland in the qualifiers. The 28-year-old top scored for Switzerland in the qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup with nine goals.

For the Philippines, their squad contains a mix of domestic stars and lesser-known talents from across the world. Quinley Quezada and Sarina Bolden are the nation’s top scorers in Stajcic’s side with 22 goals apiece, while the Philippines are the current AFF Women’s Championship title-holders, winning their first-ever trophy last year. Bolden top scored in that competition with seven goals, so she will be the nation’s main hope in the final third.
