The FA Cup is the one domestic competition that Pep Guardiola has underperformed in since taking charge of Man City in 2016, at least by their own very high standards. While Man City have won three league titles and four League Cups, they have just one FA Cup win, accompanied by three semi-final exits and one in the fifth round. That fifth round exit did come to lower-league opposition too, with League One side Wigan Athletic shocking the Citizens in 2017/18, denying them the domestic treble.
This season has been a fairly straightforward one for Man City in the FA Cup, with Guardiola’s side facing lower-league opposition in each of their previous two rounds. The third round saw them beat Swindon Town of League Two 4-1 before they knocked out Championship side Fulham by the same scoreline to set up this tie with Peterborough.
Posh will be hoping they can summon the spirit of that Wigan side, but there will already be some fans content with the club’s run in the competition so far. Peterborough have never had much fun in the FA Cup, with a quarter-final run in 1964/65 their best showing in the competition. Since that campaign, Peterborough have reached the fifth round just four times, in 1974/75, 1980/81, 1985/86 and this season.
Entering at the third round following their promotion to the Championship, Peterborough beat League Two side Bristol Rovers in their first tie before knocking out second-tier high-flyers QPR. Those have actually been Peterborough’s only two victories of 2022 with Grant McCann’s side seriously struggling in the Championship. In 10 league matches since the turn of the new year, Peterborough have earned just two points with eight defeats and now sit bottom of the Championship table, being Derby County on goal difference (despite the Rams suffering a 21-point deduction).

Peterborough vs Man City: Match Stats
Manchester City have the best defence in the Premier League, and have kept clean sheets in four of their past five games across all competitions. Although they have conceded in both of their FA Cup games so far, against lower-league opposition, it doesn’t feel too likely that Peterborough will worry the Man City defence. That’s because Posh have failed to score in seven of their past 10 games across all competitions, including five of the past six.
Whatever starting XI Guardiola fields, their attack will be strong and the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden will be hoping to fill their boots. Foden has scored three goals in his past four matches across all competitions, while Mahrez has five in six since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations

14 February 1981 – Peterborough 0-1 Man City – FA Cup
This is the opposite of a heated fixture with Peterborough and Man City facing off only once previously. Interestingly, the previous meeting came in the FA Cup fifth round at London Road in 1981, with Man City winning 1-0 en route to reaching the final (losing to Tottenham after a replay).
