It has been a gruelling and entertaining Gold Cup so far, and we are now entering the final stages of the competition. Defending champions USA have made it through to another semi-final, and they face a Panama side who have been exceptional in this tournament so far, recently smashing guest nation Qatar 4-0.
The Stars and Stripes are looking to equal Mexico’s record for the most Gold Cups in the competition’s history, and they are now just two games away from realising that, though El Tri are, of course, on the other side of the semi-final bracket, facing Jamaica — so we could have a very exciting showpiece later this month.
After topping Group A, B. J. Callaghan’s side faced bordering nation Canada in an enthralling quarter-final. Brandon Vazquez thought he won the game for USA in the dying embers, but Canada struck back in the 93rd minute through Steven Vitoria. Two more goals ensued in extra-time, before USA won on penalties.
Panama meanwhile also topped their group in style, going unbeaten. Thomas Christiansen’s Los Canaleros then thumped Qatar 4-0 in the quarter-final, though the guests were severely hampered due to a number of suspensions. The Central American nation have never won this competition, but they did reach the final in 2005, where they came up short against Thursday’s opponents.
