Graham Potter would have been feeling the heat over the winter pause as his Chelsea side entered the World Cup break off the back of five winless games, including three straight defeats. However, he inspired a 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday to renew belief and invite fresh optimism heading into the New Year.

Sunday marks the first day of 2023, and Potter will want to ensure his side start the year in positive fashion. His side are currently in eighth, but they have a game in hand on fourth-placed Tottenham which, if they win, will close the gap to only three points. It’s still exceptionally tight around the European places.

Nottingham Forest returned with a whimper on Tuesday night as they lost 3-0 to Manchester United, but Steve Cooper’s men have started to find some rhythm in recent outings. After an inauspicious start to the campaign, The Tricky Trees have only lost twice in their previous six matches.

Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea match stats

A key component of Potter’s system is building from the back and initiating quick attacking transitions. Thiago Silva fits the mould perfectly at centre-back as a springboard for getting the ball up the pitch quickly and feeding play into the midfield. It’s a similar set up to Thomas Tuchel and explains why only Virgil van Dijk (3,921) has attempted more passes than him (3,612) among Premier League centre-backs since the start of last season.

As for who might do the damage up front for Chelsea. Raheem Sterling has been directly involved in 10 goals across his previous 11 Premier League away games against newly-promoted sides (eight goals, two assists). He also netted a hat-trick in his last such game on the road to Norwich in February last season. The England international hasn’t scored since September in the Premier League, so will be itching to get back amongst the goals.
