It’s been over two months since the draw for the EFL Cup third round was made but it’s finally here, with Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham one of the all-Premier League ties. Forest entered the EFL Cup in the second round, pit against Grimsby Town, and beat their League Two opponents 3-0 away from home with a fairly rotated side. The win capped a run of two victories in their opening four matches across all competitions, but Forest have faltered massively since.

Since beating Grimsby, Steve Cooper’s side have managed just one win from their past 11 matches, losing seven of those. They have failed to score on six occasions, lost 6-0 to Manchester City and 5-0 to Arsenal, and sit rock bottom of the Premier League. In this bizarre season, though, it’s fitting that Forest’s only win during their poor run came with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

Tottenham, meanwhile, were one of the teams offered a bye into the third round as a result of their European participation and they enter the game as Champions League last 16 participants. In recent years, Tottenham have had a decent record in the EFL Cup, reaching the semi-finals in three of the past four seasons, finishing as runners-up in 2020/21.

After a strong start to the season which saw them considered Premier League title contenders, Tottenham have slowed down lately and go into this match with just two wins from their past six games across all competitions. The run started with back-to-back defeats against Manchester United and Newcastle, and continued with a draw against Sporting CP which kept Tottenham’s Champions League qualification in the balance. They did bounce back to beat Bournemouth and Marseille but at the weekend a third defeat came, losing 2-1 to Liverpool.

Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham match stats

A 90-minute tie which will go straight to penalties if level, both sides will be looking to take an advantage wherever they can. One aspect that Tottenham will feel protected from is corners, with Nottingham Forest averaging just 3.14 per game in the Premier League this season, less than any other side in the division.

As mentioned, Forest have struggled in front of goal, failing to score in six of their past 11 matches, but Tottenham haven’t been good defensively. Antonio Conte’s side haven’t kept a clean sheet in their past six matches across all competitions, and have just six from 20 overall.
