Liverpool enter the fifth round of the FA Cup fresh from winning the League Cup at the weekend, with football’s oldest national competition the only major trophy that has so far eluded Jurgen Klopp’s grasp at Anfield. Norwich meanwhile may see this contest as a welcome distraction from their troubles near the foot of the Premier League table.
The Reds beat Chelsea in a drama-fuelled penalty shootout at Wembley on Sunday to become the outright most succesful club in League Cup history. But attention swiftly shifts to another domestic cup this week, with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs when the Canaries flock to Merseyside.
Dean Smith nearly pulled off something something spectacular when he visited Anfield with Norwich nearly a fortnight ago, leading the title challengers 1-0 on the hour mark, before a late rally secured Liverpool a 3-1 win. His side will take confidence from that match, and the relegation battlers will look to apply that for this free-hit away from the Premier League’s ever-intense glare.

Liverpool vs Norwich: Match Stats
Takumi Minamino has seldom been afforded concrete opportunities in the Premier League since joining the Reds, instead having to produce when called upon in the domestic cups. So far the Japan international has a commendable goals tally of seven in the FA Cup and League Cup combined, which towers above his Premier League return for Liverpool of only three. Given Klopp faces a tough tie with West Ham this weekend, and probably gave his first-team players an extended break to revel in their League Cup triumph, he may be tempted to rotate for this clash, and that could mean playing time for the likes of Minamino.

To put it bluntly, Norwich have a wretched record against Liverpool. You would have to go back to 1994 for the last time they beat the Reds in any competition, while since 2012, they have conceded 41 goals against them at an average of four per year — despite the Canaries not being in the top-flight for four of those. In that more recent clash at Anfield, Luis Diaz got his first Liverpool goal, while they also met in the League Cup back in September, with Klopp’s men running out 3-0 victors — an identical scoreline to their Premier League clash a month prior.
