After failing to qualify for six consecutive U21 European Championships, France have reached the knockout rounds in each of the last two tournaments, where they made it to the semi-final and quarter-final respectively. A 2-1 win in their opening game put them well on their way to make it a hat-trick of knockout round appearances, as a second half strike from Bradley Barcola was enough to see off Italy.
They are now unbeaten in each of their last three group stage matches after back-to-back 2-0 wins over Russia and Iceland back in 2021, as they aim to uphold their title of pre-tournament favourites and reach the final for the first time since 2002.
They face a Norway side, who realistically need three points here if they are to avoid being knocked out in the group stages, after a 2-1 opening defeat to Switzerland. Despite averaging more possession, having more shots in the box and more shots on target, the Swiss were wasteful in front of goal.
This is just Norway’s third appearance at the U21 European Championships and the first since 2013 when they reached the semi-finals. This could be the first time they exit during the group stages after a 3rd place finish in 1998.

Norway were one of four sides not to have a single big chance in the opening round of fixtures alongside Portugal, hosts Romania and Switzerland. France won nine of their 10 qualifying games, scoring 32 goals and scoring 3+ goals in six of them. Before this tournament, each of Norway’s defeats had all been 0-3.
France picked up two yellows and one red card in their opening match against Italy and face a Norway side that completed more take-ons than any other side in the first round matches of the tournament (23), at least five more than any other side.
