The 2023 Women’s World Cup commences this week, and Group B offers a fascinating match-up between co-hosts Australia, tournament debutants Republic of Ireland, ever-presents Nigeria and 2015 quarter-finalists Canada, with latter duo meeting at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Friday.

Canada have made it out of the groups in the previous two tournaments so will be feeling confident of doing so again this time around. Bev Priestman’s side made it through the preliminaries with little fuss, finishing as runners-up in the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, which served as North America’s qualifiers.

Nigeria meanwhile have never not been involved in a Women’s World Cup, qualifying for every tournament in the competition’s history. The Super Falcons enter Australia/New Zealand with three successive wins under their belt in recent outings and having finished fourth in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, CAF’s qualification campaign for this World Cup.

Nigeria Women vs Canada Women match stats

In the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship — North America’s qualifiers — Julia Grosso and Jessie Fleming finished as the joint-top scorers in the competition with three goals apiece, with both players subsequently making it into the tournament’s ‘Best XI’. Fleming was part of the Chelsea side that claimed a Women’s Super League and Women’s FA Cup double, so her confidence will be high — though there are some minor injury worries.

Nigeria have several stars of their own — chief among those is Barcelona sensation Asisat Oshoala, who enters the World Cup after scoring four times as the Catalans lifted the 2022/23 Women’s Champions League. However, it was Atletico Madrid’s 23-year-old star Rasheedat Ajibade who top scored in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with three goals. Indeed, Randy Waldrum has impeccable firepower up front.
