Spain odds: To win Euro 2020, how far will they go, top scorer and more

Spain will be hoping they can bounce back at Euro 2020 this summer after their defeat in the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup to hosts Russia.

Now nine years on from their last major tournament win, Spain will be bidding to establish themselves at the top of international football once more as they look to recreate their heroics of 2012.

Since Spain won three major tournaments on the spin between 2008 and 2012, they’ve endured group-stage elimination at the 2014 World Cup and back-to-back Round of 32 exits at the subsequent major finals. La Furia Roja topped their qualifying group comfortably without losing a match, drawing just two of their 10 games.

It was a slow start to the tournament for Luis Enrique’s men as they were held to draws by both Sweden and Poland in their first two games, but a thumping 5-0 over Slovakia seemed to kickstart the tournament for Spain.

That victory set up what would turn out to be a stunning Round of 16 tie with Croatia which eventually resulted in a 5-3 win after extra-time followed by a penalty victory over Switzerland in the Quarter Finals.

Spain Euro 2020 squad

Luis Enrique announced his squad for this summer’s tournament and naturally, it caused debate. The most noteworthy absentee from the squad being Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos with Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte receiving a call up having changed his nationality from the current world champions, France.

Spain’s potential path to Euro 2020 final

Five games in, la Roja have only won one of their matches in normal time against Slovakia having been held to draws with Poland and Sweden in the group stages before needing extra-time to beat Croatia and penalties to beat Switzerland in the knock-outs.
