Pochettino’s next club? Dream, realistic & wildcard options based on odds

Mauricio Pochettino is looking for a new job following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

Following weeks of speculation, the Argentine has left Parc des Princes after 18 months in charge of the Ligue 1 giants.

After taking over from Thomas Tuchel in January 2021, Pochettino guided PSG to victory over Monaco in the Coupe de France final four months later.

Having lost out to Lille the previous season, the Parisians also regained their Ligue 1 crown last term; finishing 15 points clear of second-placed Marseille.

But it was arguably the club’s continued failure to land the Champions League that proved costly for Pochettino, with his side surrendering a 2-0 aggregate lead against a Karim Benzema-inspired Real Madrid in the round of 16.

Although out of work for the time being, the highly respected 50-year-old is likely to be sought after. So, where will be his next destination?

The dream? Tottenham (6/1 with Betfair)

Could we potentially see a second coming of Pochettino in North London?

The Argentine enjoyed a successful five-year spell at Tottenham between 2014 and 2019.

Indeed, he guided them to the League Cup final during his first season, then the Champions League showpiece four years later.

Pochettino also helped Spurs to a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2016-17 – and what was their final season at White Hart Lane.

Since his departure, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo have come and gone, while there are question marks over Antonio Conte’s future.

And having failed to land a trophy during his initial stint, it is safe to say the 50-year-old has unfinished business.

Most realistic? Manchester United (7/1 with Betfair)

Pochettino has been a target of United’s in the past, and was reportedly on the shortlist before Erik ten Hag got the nod.

The former Ajax boss is at the very beginning of his reign at Old Trafford, where the Red Devils are hoping for a vast improvement to their recent fortunes.

Almost a decade on, United have been unable to find a genuine long-term replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Indeed, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have all tried, but failed.

Should the team continue to produce the inconsistent displays we have become accustomed to in recent years, it will be the manager that pays the price. Could that culminate in Pochettino taking over from Ten Hag?

The wildcard option? Newcastle United (7/1 with Betfair)

Given the esteem and regard in which he is now held, Pochettino certainly won’t come cheap.

That may well open the door for Newcastle, where that will certainly not be an issue following their Saudi-led takeover last October.

Eddie Howe is beginning his first full season in charge at St James’ Park, where he steadied the ship last term and successfully steered them away from relegation danger.

With the club’s riches, the former Bournemouth boss will be looking to build on that momentum this term and propel the Magpies to the top end of the table.

While they have already open their cheque books, Newcastle are still to make their first blockbuster move of the new era.

That is also likely to extend to the dugout, where Pochettino may be tempted by a return to the Premier League should the opportunity present itself.
