Bolton Wanderers vs. Stevenage betting tip

It has simply not gone to plan for anyone concerned at fallen giants Bolton Wanderers this season. Widely tipped to return to the third tier with a clean slate under incoming boss Ian Evatt, they have instead at times been treading water above the two relegation spots into the National League and relative oblivion.

Having only escaped that same fate themselves in 2019/2020 by the dramatic fall of Macclesfield Town, Stevenage are again in a similar situation, but at least this time have more than a fighting chance of survival through their own endeavours. Their 1-0 win away at promotion chasing Tranmere Rovers was as welcome as it was unexpected, and provides them with a six-point cushion along with a vastly superior goal difference to Southend United in 23rd.

Despite their lowly standing, the Bedfordshire outfit have actually been very mean in defence, conceding just 29 in 27 games. Many of the personnel in attacking positions have decent reputations but just haven’t performed to expectations. However, they could still have just enough about them to score another upset in the north-west, and make safety all the more probable in the process.

Cambridge United vs. Southend United betting tip

League Two pacesetters Cambridge United endured a night to forget in Salford on Tuesday, going down 4-1 to the Ammies, which marked their first league defeat of the calendar year. On Saturday, they’ll host a Southend United outfit fighting for their lives at the foot of the table, but one that gained a vital victory over the U’s fellow promotion rivals Newport County to go level on points with Barrow outside the relegation zone.

Paul Mullin is by far and away the top scorer in League Two this season, but his strike was powerless to prevent that heavy defeat. He will need the defence to be much tighter against a side that will be scrapping for every loose pass and second ball at the Abbey Stadium.

The double pivot at the base of Mark Molesley’s midfield ought to offer some decent protection against the hosts’ potent attack, whilst the triumvirate behind Greg Halford (who has balanced playing at centre back with being the sole striker) should give them the ability to hold onto possession up the pitch.

Walsall vs. Cheltenham Town betting tip

Walsall, having only won eight and lost just six this term, are slipping into mid-table mediocrity with their poor recent form. The Saddlers are badly missing talisman Rory Holden, but the versatile midfielder should be just a few weeks away from being in contention for a place back in the XI.

Visitors Cheltenham Town have remained unbeaten in their last seven, but would’ve desperately liked to have gained more than two wins in that sequence to propel them to the top of the tree. The trio of colossi at the back rarely give anything away to their opponents, and it is from that bulwark that many of their points in recent weeks have been gleaned.

Alfie May has not been potent up top for the Robins outside of their excellent FA Cup run, but is a tough customer for a defender to win the ball from once he has it, and his passing helps bring in the runners from midfield.
