James Maddison Transfer Odds: Dream, realistic and wildcard options

There have been plenty of transfers across Europe this summer but the future of James Maddison still remains unresolved.

The English midfielder has impressed at Leicester City since his move from Norwich in 2018 and rumours that he will be departing the club this summer for a top six side has increased in ferocity since the end of 2021/22 season.

Whilst nothing concrete has emerged as yet, there looks to be something to the rumours with both Tottenham and Arsenal looking to make bids to take the talented 25 year old to North London.

Maddison will still be harbouring hopes of being selected by Gareth Southgate for the World Cup squad this November and a move to a Champions League chasing side could be the catalyst to that. The midfielder scored 18 and assisted 12 in all competitions last season and certainly has the pedigree to jump to the next level but where will he end up playing his football next season. Let’s look at his dream, realistic and wildcard options.

Dream: Tottenham (2/1 with Sky Bet)

Tottenham might be the ideal destination for Maddison, with the side securing Champions League football for this season and making several very promising signings already this summer.

Maddison would give Spurs something they don’t really possess in the centre of midfield; an attacking option through the centre to link the deeper midfielders and attack. A partnership with Harry Kane would also be a good one to build for Maddison, ahead of the winter World Cup and if the two were to link up well, he would almost certainly force his way into Southgate’s plans for Qatar.

There are some drawbacks for Maddison at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium however, the main one being the lack of guaranteed football. At Leicester, Maddison is fairly assured of starting the vast majority of matches but at Tottenham, that might not be the case. Tottenham have also been linked with other players that would negate the necessity for Maddison to join the club, most notably Nicolo Zaniolo of Roma.

Realistic: Arsenal (9/1 with Sky Bet)

A more realistic option, and one that wouldn’t be a bad move by any means, would be to join Arsenal. The Gunners have been linked with Maddison for a couple of years now, opting to bring Martin Odegaard to the club last summer but they are still linked with a move for the Leicester player.

Whilst Arsenal don’t have Champions League football this season, they have brought in Gabriel Jesus from Man City and their squad looks a lot more competitive than in recent years. Maddison could be the difference maker, playing in the middle of the pitch and dictating play.

Arsenal could do with some more attacking talent in midfield, especially if Fabio Vieira takes some time to adjust to English football and a move to The Emirates could be the best thing for both club and player.

Wildcard: Liverpool (20/1 with Sky Bet)

A move north to Liverpool might not stand out as the most likely transfer but if you dig a little deeper it could make sense for everyone involved.

Much has been made of Liverpool’s midfield this summer, with Jurgen Klopp reiterating that he has no plans to bring in any reinforcements, but a move for Maddison would give the Anfield side another option in a light looking midfield and could offer the Leicester player the chance to improve his game further alongside the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago.

Klopp is known for getting his man once he decides on his target, although he isn’t likely to overpay, and if he decides Maddison is the man to strengthen his midfield, then a move to Merseyside could happen quite quickly.
