Newport vs Forest Green: Predictions

Two years after losing to Tranmere Rovers at Wembley in the League Two play-off final, Newport County are looking to fight their way to a place in League One next season as they take on Forest Green Rovers in the semi-finals of the play-offs, with the first leg at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night.

The Exiles have found some consistency in the latter stages of this season and come into this fixture on the back of a run of just one defeat from nine matches and with an array of lower league experience in their ranks, the Welsh side will feel they can go one better than in 2019 this time around.

After a dreadful run of form over late March and early April that saw them dropped to sixth place, Forest Green Rovers decided to remove head coach Mark Cooper, the man who brought them into the Football League, from his position as manager. Now, leading them into the play-offs is former youth team manager, Jimmy Ball.

The former Blackburn and Stoke academy coach has improved form somewhat, with just one defeat in the six games in charge securing sixth place for the Green Devils. A settled defence including the likes of Jordan Moore-Taylor and Scott Wagstaff could be key for FGR, who will look to the prolific Jamille Matt to provide the difference in attack.

Newport vs Forest Green: Match Stats

Newport’s defence has been in terrific form of late, ending the campaign with four clean sheets from their final five matches. Given that Forest Green have failed to score in three of their last five games, we can see Exiles stopper Tom King keeping another here.

With combative midfielder Ebou Adams out injured, FGR could be in for a battle in the middle of the park particularly against 30 year old Joss Labadie. The former Tranmere Rovers man has not been afraid of getting stuck in for Newport this season, picking up a team-high of 10 yellow cards in the process.
