There is an unfamiliar air at St. James’ Park following the club’s controversial £300m Saudi-led takeover, but as far as the football is concerned it’s business as usual (for now), with Steve Bruce set to take charge of his 1,000th game as a manager, though he has only won four of his 26 games against Tottenham in that time.
After 14 years of stagnation under the ever-polarising Ashley, the Magpies will look to move forward and break the ‘Big Six’ glass ceiling, but for now immediate focus is on hauling themselves out of the relegation zone and winning their first game of the season, which they have failed to do in their opening seven games.
Spurs have had their own problems this term under summer appointment Nuno Espirito Santo, chiefly losing last month’s North London derby to bitter rivals Arsenal by a 3-1 scoreline, though fan frustration has been tempered slightly following a 2-1 win over Aston Villa just before the international break.
All eyes will be on Tyneside this weekend as the club look to embark on a power-shifting epoch in the Premier League, but in a purely footballing context, Spurs are unbeaten in their last four league visits to St. James’ Park and will be keen to extend that run as they look to climb up the table and push for the top four.
Newcastle vs Tottenham: Match Stats
Harry Kane is yet to open his Premier League account for this season, with the England international recently downplaying the link to his scoring drought with a failed move to Manchester City over the summer, but he remains as busy as ever in the final third, registering a Spurs-high eight shots on target.
Newcastle’s most active player up front this term has, of course, been Allan Saint-Maximin, who boasts a Magpies-high six shots on target. The Frenchman has also carried the ball further than any other player in the Premier League this season (1950 metres), while he is also Newcastle’s top scorer (two goals) and top creator (three assists) — he is the only Newcastle player this term with more than one assist.

Tottenham dropped four points from winning positions against Newcastle in the Premier League last season, with the Magpies netting 90th and 85th minute equalisers in their two meetings to snatch draws from the jaws of defeat. A 97th-minute Callum Wilson penalty secured the point in north London following controversial VAR intervention, while then Arsenal loanee Joe Willock bagged at the death on Tyneside to clinch a result.
