A drama-frenzied ending to the contest has hopefully set the tempo for this second leg. The good thing for Nathan Jones is that his side are very much still in the contest. The next goal will prove absolutely crucial as both clubs vie to reach Wembley and a showdown, most likely, against Manchester United, who beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 in their first leg.
Newcastle haven’t reached the final of a domestic cup since May 1999, and Eddie Howe will be desperate to get the club’s ambition to establish themselves as a consistent powerhouse up and running. The Saints have been more recent visitors to Wembley, reaching the final of this competition in 2017, where they lost to Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd 3-2.

Newcastle vs Southampton match stats
Alexander Isak came off the bench to produce a quite outrageous assist for Joelinton in the first leg, but Kieran Trippier has been Newcastle’s most creatively potent force this term. Incredibly, only Kevin De Bruyne (63) has created more chances than Trippier (59) in the Premier League this season.
James Ward-Prowse hasn’t been too far off, either. The England midfielder has created 42 chances for his team-mates in the English top flight, placing him sixth in the list, and below only De Bruyne (63), Trippier (59), Bruno Fernandes (50), Andreas Pereira (48) and Bukayo Saka (43).

Despite Newcastle only really rising to major European-chasing prominence this season, Southampton have only won once against them in their last 12 meetings. That sole triumph came in November 2020, with Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong getting the goals for Ralph Hasenhuttl against Steve Bruce’s men.
