Newcastle vs Southampton: Predictions
Ralph Hasenhuttl suffered the indignation of becoming the first Premier League manager to lose by a 9-0 scoreline on more than one occasion as his side were ruthlessly put to the sword at Old Trafford.
Perhaps more importantly, Southampton have now lost their last four Premier League games and having initially looked like challenging for European places, are now in the bottom half. Hasenhuttl will be cursing his luck with injuries and suspensions, with almost an entire starting XI’s worth of players sidelined.
Saints will at least take heart in the fact that Newcastle have lost seven of their last eight Premier League games, with the Magpies unable to build on their 2-0 win over Everton, falling 2-1 away at Crystal Palace on Tuesday.
Steve Bruce’s men are now 16th in the table, only ahead of Burnley on goal difference and just eight points clear of 18th-placed Fulham having played a game more than both.

Newcastle vs Southampton: Match Stats
Southampton’s shots faced in 2020/21
Newcastle have lost just one of their last 15 home Premier League games against Southampton. Only Everton and Aston Villa (14) have lost more games at St James’ Park than Southampton (13) during the Premier League era.
Southampton’s 9-0 defeat against Manchester United was only the third instance of a team losing by 9+ goals in a Premier League match and the Saints have ended on the losing side of two of them – also Man Utd 9-0 Ipswich (1995) and Southampton 0-9 Leicester (2019).
Callum Wilson has been directly involved in 15 Premier League goals in his first 20 appearances for the Magpies (10 goals, 5 assists), the most in a Newcastle player’s first 20 games in the top-flight since Demba Ba in February 2012 (16 goals, 1 assist).
Southampton haven’t lost five consecutive league matches since September 1998 under Dave Jones. This is the longest losing run of Hasenhuttl’s managerial career.
Although they lost 2-0 last time, Newcastle have had the upper hand in recent meetings with Southampton, enjoying a six-game unbeaten run prior to that recent loss. The Magpies have lost just one of their last 15 home games against the Saints.
