Co-hosts New Zealand take part in their sixth Women’s World Cup and will be aiming to progress beyond the groups for the first time in their history. Under the leadership of former United States youth coach Jitka Klimkova, the Football Ferns mark the start of the tournament this Thursday on home soil at Eden Park.
There is plenty of experience in the squad with 163-capped Tottenham star Ria Percival, Brighton & Hove Albion defender Rebekah Stott and Leicester City’s CJ Bott, but Norway will feel they have the advantage when it comes to star-studded names in their international roll call, particularly with a certain Ada Hegerberg lying in wait.
Hege Riise has a prestigious CV that includes managerial roles as England’s interim boss and head coach of Great Britain Olympic, but this is her biggest challenge yet.
With the likes of former Ballon d’Or winner Hegerberg, Barcelona sensations Caroline Graham Hansen and Ingrid Syrstad Engen, as well as Chelsea’s Maren Mjelde and Guro Reiten, Bayern Munich’s Tuva Hansen, and Arsenal’s Frida Maanum, Norway have a firm chance of reaching the latter rounds.

Hannah Wilkinson is New Zealand’s all-time top scorer at Women’s World Cups with two goals. She is the only player ever to score in multiple competitions, having bagged in 2011 against Mexico and 2015 against China. The Melbourne City forward may be the Football Ferns’ best route to goal on Thursday.
For Norway, Caroline Graham Hansen has more international goals than any other player in the squad, netting thrice in the qualifiers (44), but Ada Hegerberg is just one behind with 43 strikes, and that despite spending five years away from the national team as a form of personal protest. She’s back, though, and ferocious as always up front.
