Well, it’s safe to say nobody expected this to be a last 16 tie at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Although one of the top nations in the world, Netherlands weren’t expected to finish as Group E winners, partly due to their lost identity over a poor period and also due to the fact that they were in the same group as the United States. But the 2017 European champions did indeed finish top with seven points from their three games, sitting two clear of second-placed USA. Andries Jonker’s side started the tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Portugal and then drew with USA, taking the lead in the first half before settling for a point. Netherlands went into the final round of fixtures knowing they needed to win big to secure top spot, as USA were expected to beat Portugal, and they did exactly that with a 7-0 victory over Vietnam — though it would turn out that a 1-0 win would have been enough.
Group G was one of the most equal groups at the World Cup in terms of quality, with Sweden out clear but South Africa, Italy and Argentina all having relatively similar chances to join them in the last 16. Of those three teams, South Africa were perhaps the least favoured to make it through but here they are in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup for the first ever time. It wasn’t the best start for South Africa as they lost to Sweden in their opening game despite going 1-0 up and then dropped two points against Argentina in a 2-2 draw having been 2-0 up. But in their final game it was time for South Africa to record a comeback, coming from 1-0 down to eventually win 3-2 thanks to an injury-time winner that sent them through at the expense of opponents Italy. Their first ever Women’s World Cup win, it was a monumental moment for women’s football in South Africa.

Netherlands Women vs South Africa Women match tip
Jill Roord to score anytime @ 15/8 with Betfair
With Vivianne Miedema out injured, the Netherlands had to look elsewhere for their main goalscoring threat and it’s come in the form of Jill Roord. An attacking midfielder, Roord has been spending a lot of time closer to the opposition goal, given the freedom that she perhaps hasn’t had at club level recently. The new Manchester City signing has scored three goals at the Women’s World Cup so far, with only Alexandra Popp and Hinata Miyazawa (both four) netting more.
Netherlands Women vs South Africa Women Bet-Builder tip
Netherlands to win, over 2.5 goals, BTTS & Netherlands to have 6 or more shots on target
This Women’s World Cup has shown us to expect the unexpected, but Netherlands should have enough to get over the line against South Africa having stretched their attacking muscles last time out. But South Africa should not be taken lightly, having scored six goals across their three group stage matches. However, they were as leaky defensively as they were prolific in attack, also letting in six goals across the three games.
Netherlands Women vs South Africa Women team news
Danielle van de Donk was the only Netherlands player to get a booking in the group stage so will need to walk a tightrope to avoid missing the quarter-final through suspension. Esmee Brugts starred on the left against Vietnam and will be hoping for another good performance here.
