Netherlands were runners-up at the World Cup four years ago, losing 2-0 to USA in the final, but they aren’t really fancied to make it all the way this time around. Since losing the final, Netherlands have lost Sarina Wiegman to England and also seem to have lost a bit of their identity, struggling under Mark Parsons before Andries Jonker took charge.
Qualifying for the World Cup wasn’t exactly straightforward for Netherlands either as they finished just two points clear of second-placed Iceland, dropping points in two draws against Czech Republic. They are also without all-time top scorer Vivianne Miedema, which has added some worries further up the pitch.
Portugal, meanwhile, are making their debut at the World Cup having appeared in back-to-back European Championships and will be hoping to get past the group stage for the first time. They will also be looking to get just their second win at a major tournament, losing four and drawing one of their six matches.
Confidence will be fairly high going into the tournament as Portugal held England to a goalless draw at the start of the month before behind Ukraine in a friendly. Portugal’s spot at the World Cup was secured via the inter-confederation play-offs with a 2-1 win over Cameroon.

One of the questions for Netherlands to answer this summer is how they will do without Miedema. Based on their pre-tournament friendlies, the answer could be better than first feared with Netherlands putting five past Belgium having also scored four against Poland in April. There were five different scorers against Belgium with the scoring rounded off late on by Everton striker Katja Snoeijs who now has 10 goals in 16 games for her national side (though six of those did come against Kosovo).
On the other side of this game, Portugal have proven themselves to be a resolute side defensively and will look to frustrate Netherlands. In their past eight official games, Portugal have conceded four goals and kept five clean sheets including the aforementioned one against England earlier this month.
