The Netherlands will aim to break a nearly four-decade drought for an international title at Euro 2024 this summer. During the last pan-European tournament, the Dutch team was disappointed to be eliminated shortly after advancing from the group stage. Frank de Boer was replaced as head coach, and Louis van Gaal returned to guide the Netherlands to a quarter-final exit at the recent World Cup finals. There’s a feeling of familiarity with Ronald Koeman now following in Van Gaal’s footsteps. Although the Dutch team has several well-known players who can come together to form a strong team, their performance remains unpredictable.

The showdown between Netherlands and Austria occurs on June 25 at the Olympiastadion, Berlin.

Austria aims for its first major international tournament success when it travels to neighbouring Germany this summer. Under the leadership of Ralf Rangnick, known as the ‘godfather of gegenpressing’, there is a renewed belief that Austria could be a dark horse in the competition. This will be the nation’s fourth European Championship appearance, and to make history, they must successfully navigate the first knockout round.

Both teams know the best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages. If one team loses, they will remain optimistic, as there is still a chance to advance.

Koeman’s main challenge for this summer’s tournament is deciding on his starting lineup. He has used both a back-four and a back-three but prefers the latter. This approach makes sense, given the Dutch team’s defensive strength. Frenkie de Jong will start in the heart of the Netherlands’ midfield, and Memphis Depay is expected to lead the attack for Oranje.

Austria Latest Team News

After a disappointing stint at Manchester United, Ralf Rangnick became the manager of the Austrian national team. His first 20 matches have been successful, with 12 wins, including the last five in a row. Rangnick’s emphasis on counter-pressing will likely influence the team’s approach. The team’s formation is yet to be determined, as Rangnick has experimented with different formations.

Netherlands vs Austria Head-to-Head

In the first 12 meetings, Austria had the upper hand, winning half of the matches. However, the Netherlands had a dominant victory at the 1978 World Cup, with a 5-1 win under the leadership of Austrian coach Ernst Happel. Happel later led the opposing team in May 1992, when the Netherlands began a winning streak that continues to this day. In the most recent Euro 2020 group match, Frank de Boer’s team secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries in Amsterdam.
