Bayer Leverkusen were the Champions League dropouts in this tie, finishing third in Group B behind Porto and Club Brugge. A fairly even group at the start, Leverkusen seriously underwhelmed with just five points from their six matches, winning one. That one victory would prove crucial though as it allowed them to finish above Atletico Madrid on head-to-head.
Back in the Europa League for the fifth consecutive season, Leverkusen’s return hasn’t gone to plan so far, being on the wrong end of a thrilling 3-2 scoreline. After going 1-0 down, Leverkusen had turned things around to 2-1 by the hour mark but eventually lost thanks to Axel Disasi’s injury-time winner. And history isn’t on Leverkusen’s side, with the Germans being eliminated from all 11 previous two-legged knockout ties in major European competitions after losing the first leg at home.
On the other side of this tie, Monaco also have a brilliant record when winning the first leg of a two-legged knockout tie in major European competitions away from home, advancing on all 10 of the previous occasions. However, a home defeat is what cost Monaco direct passage to the last 16 of the Europa League.
Placed in an interesting group alongside Trabzonspor, Red Star Belgrade and Ferencvaros, Monaco finished level on points with the latter. But the Ligue 1 side dropped to second on head-to-head having lost to Ferencvaros at home and only drawn the away fixture.
