The 17th annual MLS All-Star match takes place this Thursday, with the best players from MLS taking on last year’s Premier League runners-up Arsenal in what is always an incredibly entertaining game.
The All-Stars currently hold a 9-7 record in the competition, winning each of the last two matches against the Liga MX All-Stars, but have failed to beat European opposition in the last four attempts. This includes a 2-1 defeat to the Gunners back in 2016, with goals from Joel Campbell and an 87th-minute winner from Chuba Akpom giving Arsenal the win that day, after Didier Drogba had equalised just before half-time for the home side.
The Gunners have taken a strong squad with them on the US tour and fans may get their first glimpses of new signings Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber in an Arsenal shirt.
MLS All-Stars vs Arsenal match stats
Bukayo Saka scored Arsenal’s only goal of the game in their first pre-season game of the 2023/24 season against Nurnberg last Thursday, before Jorginho’s bizarre own goal ensured the game finished 1-1. The forward was in fine form last season, scoring 14 times and providing 11 assists in 38 Premier League appearances, finishing the campaign with his first senior hat-trick as England beat North Macedonia 7-0 and will want to push on again this season.
MLS All-Star matches tend to be full of goals, with BTTS landing in nine of the last 10 games. The All-Stars’ last five matches against English opposition has seen over 2.5 goals land each time, with the five matches averaging 4.8 goals per game.
