Middlesbrough’s revival under Michael Carrick was a sight to behold last season as he took them from 21st in October to fourth at the end of the season, with the play-off semi-finals one step too far, losing to Coventry 1-0 on aggregate. This season, they will be hoping to go one step further and return to the top flight for the first time in five years.

Millwall’s play-off dreams meanwhile, came crashing down on the final game of the season as they threw a 3-1 lead over Blackburn on the final day to lose 4-3. They finished just one point behind Sunderland in sixth, winning just two of their final nine matches and losing four of their final six as they threw it all away.
