So often the favourites for this tournament, Mexico have failed to deliver at the Gold Cup so far this year. Fresh from another defeat to the United States in the semi-finals of the Concacaf Nations League, El Tri looked to be making a great start this tournament, beating Honduras 4-0 before a 3-1 win over Haiti was a little less comfortable than it should have been. That was then followed up by a rather embarrassing 1-0 defeat to Qatar and although Mexico still topped Group B, they’re hardly firing on all cylinders.

In Costa Rica, they face an opponent who really had to grind it out in Group C, beating Martinique in a ridiculous 6-4 encounter in the final game following a 2-1 loss to Panama and a goalless draw against El Salvador. Regardless, Los Ticos are an opponent that can never be underestimated and will want to prove their credentials against one of the tournament favourites.

Mexico vs Costa Rica match stats

Luis Romo is the only Mexican player to score more than a single goal at the Gold Cup so far, though both his strikes came in a 4-0 win over Honduras. Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez will be expected to provide the goal threat this weekend and has already netted at the tournament during Mexico’s 3-1 win over Haiti.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, have seen a different goalscorer for each of their seven strikes at the tournament so far, six of which came in their previous match against Martinique. Los Ticos have kept just one clean sheet at the tournament up to now.

All of that said, this fixture hasn’t been flush with goals in recent times with neither side scoring more than one goal in a single match in the past five meetings.
