It has been a tumultuous few weeks at the Stade Velodrome, culminating in the acrimonious departure of Andre Villas-Boas, meaning Marseille enter this contest against perennial French champions PSG without a manager and completely out of sorts in Ligue 1.
The Phocaeans were riding the crest of a wave only a few months backs under Villas-Boas, who followed on from an impressive Ligue 1 maiden campaign, in which he guided the club to a runners-up position, to completely capitulating in the league and publicly questioning the club’s recruitment policy following the arrival of Olivier Ntcham.
A 1-0 win over PSG on matchday two and a six-game winning run in autumn had Marseille very much in the mix to usurp PSG as Ligue 1 champions, but one win from their following nine games has seen them drop out of the title race conversation completely – and they are now floating precariously in ninth.
Change has also transpired in the capital, with Pochettino replacing Thomas Tuchel last month. Since his return to the Parc des Princes, the Argentine has made a strong start to his tenure, finally winning silverware after collecting the Trophee des Champions — incidentally at the expense of Marseille — while his side are only three points off the summit in Ligue 1.

Since Pochettino took the Parisian reins, Angel Di Maria has really come to the fore under his compatriot. Most recently against Nimes in a 3-0 win, he both scored and assisted, while against Sunday’s opponents, the mercurial forward boasts a strong record. He has been directly involved in six goals across his last four Ligue 1 matches against Marseille (two goals, four assists).
The 32-year-old broke the deadlock against Nimes on Wednesday in the 18th minute, and by doing so, he became the second Argentine to reach 50 goals in the French top-flight with PSG, after Carlos Bianchi (64).

The writing was on the wall for Tuchel after his side lost their opening two Ligue 1 games this season by an identical scoreline of 1-0, one of which came at the hands of Villas-Boas’ Marseille. Despite that power-shifting result, the Parisians have since stolen a march on Marseille in the Ligue 1 title race, as well as pulling off a huge result in the Trophee des Champions, which took on a deeper significance as it was two former Tottenham managers coming face-to-face for a piece of silverware. Pochettino duly lifted his first trophy as the main man in the dugout.
