Brighton’s first ever European game didn’t go to plan at home to AEK Athens in MD1, as despite twice coming from behind, the Seagulls ended up losing 2-3 thanks to an 84th minute goal from substitute Ponce. Roberto De Zerbi’s side were behind after just 11 minutes to former Everton man Djibril Sidebe’s header, before a penalty either side of Gaćinović’s goal by Joao Pedro has meant the game was all square, before disaster happened late on.

And if that wasn’t bad enough for Brighton, they suffered their worst ever Premier League defeat at the hands of Aston Villa at the weekend, conceding six times in the competition for the first time in a 6-1 defeat at Villa Park.

Marseille, meanwhile, were also involved in an end -to-end match in the Europa League, as they came from behind three times to secure a point away at Ajax with the match ending 3-3. The French side have now won just one of their last 15 Europa League games (D6 L8) and will be hoping for a better result against on Europe’s newest sides.
