Paul Ince faces a daunting task when the former Manchester United midfielder returns to Old Trafford with his Reading team that sit 14th in the Championship table.

Erik ten Hag’s side are currently on a 12-game unbeaten run at home across all competitions, winning each of the last 10 by an aggregate score of 26-4 and keeping nine clean sheets in their last 12 matches at Old Trafford. The Red Devils crashed out in this exact round last season after a 9-8 penalty defeat to Middlesbrough and will be looking to avoid back-to-back fourth round exits for the first time since 2002.

Opponents Reading go into this game on the back of a 4-0 thrashing by Stoke, having picked up just one win in their last six Championship matches and will be hoping the cup can be a welcome distraction after dispatching Watford 2-0 in the previous round.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in each of their last 17 games against The Royals, with Reading’s sole victory in this fixture coming all the way back in 1927.

Manchester United vs Reading match stats

Marcus Rashford has been in unstoppable form since returning from the World Cup with England, scoring 10 goals and providing a further two assists in his 10 matches across all competitions for the Red Devils. The forward has scored more goals than any other player across Europe’s top five leagues in that period, with only Erling Haaland (31) scoring more goals among Premier League players in all competitions across the entire season than Rashford (18).

The Englishman has also been Erik ten Hag’s go-to guy in domestic cup competitions so far this term, scoring six times in his five appearances in the League and FA Cup, becoming the first United player to score 5+ goals in a League Cup campaign since Carlos Tevez in 2008/09 (6).

As well as keeping nine clean sheets in their last 12 matches at Old Trafford, Manchester United have also been scoring for fun, finding the back of the net three or more times in five of their last seven games (20 goals in total). Since their opening day defeat to Brighton, only Aston Villa have managed to score twice at Old Trafford and they still fell to a 4-2 defeat.
