The first season of the Erik ten Hag era at Manchester United went fairly well with a cup and return to Champions League confirmed but now the Red Devils must push on and ensure this is just the start of their climb back up the English table. Man Utd have made two big-name signings so far this summer with Mason Mount and Andre Onana joining for a combined fee of just under £100m, the latter to replace David de Gea who was allowed to leave.
After a brief stay in Norway, where they beat Leeds and Lyon, Man Utd travelled to the United States for the main leg of their pre-season tour with four more games planned. The first saw them beat fellow Premier League side Arsenal 2-0 but they have lost their last two matches, beaten by Wrexham and Real Madrid — though the former saw them field youth and reserve players.
Borussia Dortmund also had two legs of their pre-season, starting against a few lower-league German sides with wins over Westfalia Rhynern, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Erfurt. Their stay in America started with a 6-0 win over local side San Diego Loyal before games against Man Utd against Chelsea.
While Man Utd will have been positive about last season, there will definitely be an air of regret around Dortmund as they lost the Bundesliga title on the final day. All Dortmund needed to do was beat Mainz on the final day of the Bundesliga season and the title was theirs but they draw 1-1 which handed the trophy to Bayern Munich, who won their final game to take the league on goal difference.

Man Utd came unstuck against Real Madrid in their last pre-season friendly, losing 2-0 to Los Blancos but their preparations have been good so far. The Red Devils had 15 shots against Real Madrid with five on target, but just couldn’t find their way past Andriy Lunin in goal.
Dortmund, meanwhile, have been all about the goals in pre-season though of course they have been player lower-ranked opponents. Man Utd also finally conceded in pre-season against Real Madrid (not including the defeat to Wrexham) after keeping three clean sheets.
