AC Milan vs Man Utd: Predictions

Manchester United’s hunt for a trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has realistically been narrowed down to just the Europa League and the FA Cup this season with Manchester City still cruising at the top of the Premier League with their 14-point lead as they look to claim the trophy back from Liverpool.

The initial disappointment of dropping out of the Champions League is now a distant memory with United going into the second leg of their last 16 tie against AC Milan having conceded their expected advantage to a stoppage-time equaliser at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are likely to confirm their place in next season’s Champions League through their league position, however, Solskjaer would be more than happy to lift the trophy following in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho who did so in 2017.

AC Milan’s title charge has fallen off the rails since their derby defeat to Inter last month as Stefano Pioli’s side now find themselves nine points behind their city rivals who lead the way in the race for the Serie A crown. Milan suffered another defeat on the weekend as they succumbed to top-four hopefuls, Napoli, in a 1-0 home defeat.

Pioli’s side clinched a crucial away goal in the second minute of stoppage time at Old Trafford last week to cancel out Amad Diallo’s first-half header. With Milan now holding the advantage over United as a result of their away goal, Solksjaer’s men will have to step up at the San Siro to progress to the final eight of the competition.

AC Milan vs Man Utd: Match Stats

Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation since arriving in Manchester in January 2020, the Portuguese midfielder (16) has scored the same number of goals in the Premier League as Harry Kane this season and has netted twice in just his three appearances in this season’s Europa League. With United going to Italy on the back foot, they will be looking at the 26-year-old for some inspiration to earn their spot in the quarter-finals.

Dean Henderson has taken over as United’s number one goalkeeper in the absence of David de Gea, however, despite his solid performance for 90 minutes against the Italians last week he was left red-faced after the away side’s equaliser in the remaining seconds of the game. The young goalkeeper will be hoping he can make amends for his mistake last Thursday.
