Man City have really dominated the EFL Cup in recent years, winning six of the past eight editions, with only Chelsea in 2015 and Manchester United in 2017 able to break their hold. Four of Man City’s six wins have come in each of the past four seasons, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham the four teams to fall in the final. That run has seen Man City join Liverpool as the most successful club in EFL Cup history with eight total victories and they’ll be looking to break the record this year. Man City go into the game off the back of a disappointing goalless draw with Southampton in the Premier League, so Pep Guardiola’s side may look to this game as an opportunity to get back on track.

That’s not good news for Wycombe, who have been in good form at the start of the League One season following their relegation from the Championship. Gareth Ainsworth’s men have won four of their opening seven league matches and sit just two points behind early leaders Wigan Athletic, losing only one game so far. As far as the EFL Cup goes, Wycombe haven’t made it easy for themselves to reach the third round, beating both Exeter City and Stevenage on penalties.

Man City vs Wycombe: Match Stats

Guardiola has revealed he will rely on some academy players as Man City try to deal with an upcoming tough run of fixtures, facing Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool within nine days. But there should also be an opportunity for bigger players to start, including Ferran Torres who has been Guardiola’s go-to false nine but sat out against Southampton at the weekend. The Spaniard has scored two goals so far this season, getting both in a 5-0 win over Arsenal.

Even with a rotated side, Man City will expect to have too much quality for Wycombe and the defence will be looking to build on a clean sheet at the weekend against Southampton. Across all competitions so far this season, Man City have kept four clean sheets in seven game including three in four at the Etihad.
