Man City vs Tottenham: Predictions
Hopes of a quadruple for Manchester City were shattered at the weekend as Chelsea knocked the North West club out of the FA Cup semi-finals, but Pep Guardiola will be determined to retain his Carabao Cup crown having won the competition in each of the past three seasons.
Silverware hasn’t been quite so prominent in north London as it has been at the Etihad in recent years, with Tottenham still chasing a first domestic trophy since winning this competition 13 years ago, and the task to deliver now falls on the stripling shoulders of 29-year-old interim boss Ryan Mason.
Trophy specialist Jose Mourinho was relieved of his services just a week before the showpiece event in the capital, with the powers that be deciding his job was simply untenable after 17 months in charge of the club, so Mason — the Premier League’s youngest ever manager — now has the job of outfoxing Guardiola.
He kicked off his temporary tenure with a far-from-convincing 2-1 win over Southampton in midweek, but this challenge against the Premier League champions-elect and current Carabao Cup holders will be a different beast altogether. Can he mark his nascent coaching career with an early medal? Or will it be four in a row for City?

Man City vs Tottenham: Match Stats
Gareth Bale has already issued a thinly-veiled swipe at Mason’s predecessor Mourinho, saying Spurs ‘need to attack more’, so we can expect a more expansive side this weekend, but that could, of course, prove a poisoned chalice against Guardiola’s City, who relish any opportunity to fight fire with fire.
Whether Mason takes a more pragmatic approach remains to be seen, but this is a contest that could be determined on the flanks. City are a side programmed and conditioned to stretch the play, utilising their ever-willing high full-backs to overlap and assist in attacking transitions.
As such, City have naturally totted up a high corner count, the most in the Premier League this season (220), in fact, while they are one of only two clubs to have registered 200+ plus alongside Liverpool (205). Mason’s job will be to prevent the likes of Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo having the freedom to dictate on the bylines.

Tottenham’s 2-0 win in autumn looked to have elicited a power-shifting moment in the Premier League, with Mourinho masterminding his side to the summit of the table and they looked good value for their lead. Of course, the cards eventually came tumbling down and culminated in his eventual dismissal, but that match proved that when Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are at it, they can cause problems for any side.
